When the BGEID comes into force in early 2026, cantons and municipalities will be required to accept the E-ID as proof of identity. Authorities have a maximum of two years to adapt their systems. This affects every digital citizen service, from portal login to building permit submissions. Many existing regulations at cantonal and municipal level still require physical copies of official ID documents or mandate in-person appearances. At the same time, it should be questioned whether identification is even necessary in every process. The BGEID promotes the principle of data minimization.
The trust infrastructure behind the E-ID enables cantons and municipalities to issue their own electronic credentials. Examples include learner driving permits, debt enforcement extracts or membership confirmations. The canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden is already piloting the electronic learner driving permit.
